When it comes to being a cheapskate, this scrapyard boss doesn't believe in half measures. After he found the clapped out Fiat Punto he'd bought was too big for his truck, instead of hiring a bigger one he simply sliced the car in two with a chainsaw on the spot. But when furious neighbours saw petrol and oil pouring down the street they dialled 999."We heard this tremendous racket and there were two men with chainsaws hacking a car to pieces. I thought it was a practical joke and kept looking for the hidden cameras," said one.Now police in Essen, Germany, say he faced industrial pollution charges for allowing the fuel and oil to enter the water system through the drains.

A hard-headed home-owner has halted a 350 million GBP luxury development because he refused to move out of his one-bed apartment.Stubborn Zou Mingcan, 70 - from Kunming, Yunnan province, southern China - has declared war on the builders and has rigged his sixth floor flat with a series of home-made weapons and booby traps.Sporting a military camouflage uniform, Zou stands guard on the roof with a terrifying array of Molotov cocktails, bricks and rocks which he pelts the developers with.In revenge builders crushed his car and left it flattened outside the apartment block on an island of land.Planners claim they warned Zou nearly a year ago that the apartment block was scheduled for demolition as part of a huge expansion of the city's upmarket housing district."I used to be a builder so I know all their tricks. They won't get me out of here until they pay me proper compensation. I know how much my flat is worth to them so they might as well pay up," said Zou.

These bizarre traffic lights have got drivers seeing red after bringing streets to a standstill in southern China.Locals say there are more than 20 different sets of lights on a single pole controlling one set of crossroads in Chongqing city."When you look at one light it's red but the one next to is it green."No-one knows where or when to go because they just seem to change randomly," said one motorist. But local traffic officials have baffled drivers - by saying they shouldn't obey any of them."They are just for decoration because the junction looked bare. They look very pretty at night but drivers should just ignore them," said a spokesman..Central European News / Photonews

Romantic Lu Zen wanted his proposal to his unsuspecting girlfriend to be just Super - so he floated down from the sky on balloons as the Man of Steel to pop the question.Lu, 26 - from Donghai, Jiangsu province, eastern China - had taken girlfriend Lina Hu to their favourite restaurant for lunch when, in true Clark Kent style, he slipped away from the table to make a phone call.Minutes later the couple's friends were calling her out to the front of the eaterie where Lu - now wearing a Superman costume and cape - was hovering 30ft above the ground on a rope from a crane surrounded by balloons. Then as he was lowered gracefully to the ground, Lu proposed in front of a cheering crowd."Luckily she said yes. I'd have looked a complete idiot if she'd turned me down," he said before the couple rode off on a procession of mopeds and bikes with their pals."Everyone knew except her. I don't know how we kept it a secret," he added.Central European News / Photonews

Any woman could have told you it was going to go off early. So when artists set out to explode a 15ft tall sculpture of a penis, it should come as no surprise that it didn't quite make it to the end of the countdown. The thee-and-a-half ton cock up - in Bad Blumau, Austria - was a protest by artist Emmerich Weissenberge about hostile public reaction to the piece, titled Gaia."I wanted to express the message that you should not destroy art if you do not understand it," explained Weissenberge, after watching his work blown to pieces on the count of eight instead of 10.The sculpture - made or organic plastic - was originally made for the Green Expo show in Vienna last year but faced massive hostility from visitors.
