She might look like an ugly duckling now, but this little chick will soon grow up to be one of the most impressive birds in her zoo. The days-old Dalmatian pelican - dubbed 'Dino' by keepers because of her featherless dinosaur looks - is set to become a star of Vienna's Schoenbrunn Zoo. "She might look a little plain and scrawny now but she'll become important bird. Dalmatian pelicans are endangered and that makes Dino a crucial part of our breeding programme," said one keeper. "Her parents are very attentive so we think she'll make it," added zoo director Dagmar Schratter. CEN / Photonews

An English toddler stopped breathing and had to be reanimated after being crushed by a giant three metre snowman while on holiday in the luxury VIP resort of Leutasch next to the Austrian Seefeld ski resort in Tyrol. Three-year-old Loui Kindal and his parents had just arrived in the region from the United Kingdom and checked into their hotel when the accident happened. The giant snowman had been built by local artist for a festival set to take place at the weekend but for unknown reasons as the youngster walked up to it suddenly collapsed and a large part of the figure landed on the toddler. The snowman which had been frozen rock hard completely covered the toddler who had been standing only a few meters away from his father Yves, 31. The dad said: "I ran over straight away and my only thought was to get my son out as possible -- but it was like concrete. I was ripping and tearing at the snow and my hands were bleeding but I didn't care. By the time I pulled him out from under the snowman he had turned blue and was no longer breathing. We had to perform artificial respiration to get him breathing again." The toddler was flown with an emergency helicopter to hospital in nearby Innsbruck and has been put in an artificial coma. New Delhi: Four workers of a factory in India's southern Kerala state spent four months using 470,000 coir tufts to churn out "the world's longest doormat" - and they are hoping it will go straight into the Guinness Book of World Records. The mat made at the Travancore Cocotuft (P) Ltd factory measures 101.6 metres (333.3ft) in length, 1.2 metres (4ft) in width, is 30mm thick and weighs 999 kg. It costs about Rs.4 lakh. "They (Guinness World Records) have asked us for the basic information and we are in the process of preparing that and once they are convinced, they will visit us to see the product, which is a doormat,' said P. Mahadevan, CEO of the company, here. The thought of manufacturing the world's longest mat, according to Mahadevan, was inspired by a project initiated in the state for the SIDBI in Alappuzha, for the growth of the coir industry in the state. A white-hand gibbon baby nicknamed E.T. by carers after it was born last September "for being cute but ugly" has turned into a sweet monkey at Vienna’s Schoenbrunn Zoo, the oldest zoo in the world. E.T. has developed into a beautiful monkey with fluffy brown fur, while only the palms of its hands and feet are covered with white fur which gives the breed its name. E.T. is yet to receive an "official" name since its sex has not yet been determined. The young gibbon has become a crowd favourite. Zoo boss Dagmar Schratter said: "It stays with its mum Sipura for 95 per cent of a day’s time, but also likes to use the ladder or the swing. If it plays around too wildly, its mother grabs it."
