When this young deer tried to slip out of a park in Celle, Germany, the way she'd got in, she found herself stuck fast in the bars. Police and firefighters were called by anxious passers-by who saw the animal struggling to free herself. "She was terrified so we covered her head in a blanket to keep her calm and then cut through the bars to free her," said one officer. Then -after a check-up by a vet - police released the deer into a local wood. CEN / Photonews

Two baby lemurs that had to be raised by keepers after they were abandoned by their mother have been successfully reunited with their mum. The mum showed no interest in her twin babies Manja and Tanala when they were born at the end of April and the keepers needed to hand feed them. But every day the baby's were taken into the cage and shown to the mother who was allowed to sniff them out to touch them - and gradually started to warm to the two youngsters. Eventually they were placed in the enclosure with their mother in a separate cage and then after a few days released into the main enclosure where they quickly bonded with their natural mother. They continued to feed with mother and at the end of the day Mum and baby's cuddled up to sleep as if they had always been together. Schönbrunn zoo boss Dagmar Schratter said: "It is always a last resort to raise young animals by hand and we are particularly delighted at how well reintegrating them with their mother has worked. The fact they have been reunited at such an early age will allow them to learn to integrate probably with the other Lemurs - and to learn their language." although at first Mum was not at all interested they are now in severable and when they aren't playing mother and babies are cuddled together. It was a trunk call that caused a jumbo-sized problem for traffic police in China when this family of elephants were determined to reach a second herd on the other side of the motorway. The tuskers - a male, three females and their youngsters - insisted on crossing the busy Sixiao highway in Yunnan province, southern China, when they heard the other family group calling from the surrounding jungle. So highway patrol officers formed an impromptu tusk force to make sure the beasts were not hurt as they scrambled over safety barriers on the 70mph road. EuroPics CEN / Photonews

Taking your first ever steps as a newborn are not easy when you weigh in at 112 kilos but as these pictures show it all worked out in the end - with a bit of help from mum. The as yet unnamed baby elephant was born this morning at Schoenbrunn Zoo in Vienna, Austria. And once he was on his feet it did not take long before the heavyweight youngster was out and about - delighting zoo visitors at the world's oldest zoo. "We have been waiting for the birth for days and then suddenly he was there. It was all very quick" said Zoo director Dagmar Schratter. Numbi is now resting after the birth and from the stress of following her baby elephant for his first few steps. "Once they have both had time to rest and connect with each other they will be let outside again for public viewing at the zoo." Continued Dagma. Numbi already had a baby 5 years ago, Kibo who lives also in Schönnbrunn and will be a play mate for the new baby. CEN / Photonews
